WHO IS GRAHAM RIES?

That’s me. My name is Graham Ries. They say a picture paints a thousand words. In that case the montage I prepared on the left should tell you pretty much my whole life story. Except that it doesn’t. You see, whilst everyone has a story, many have more than one. If you look at me now, sitting in front of a 24-inch computer screen in a comfortable flat, working on this website, and in a moment or two going to start getting ready to meet my pastor and to go to our weekly Life Group meeting (home cell to the unadventurous) you’d never say that I know exactly what it is like to be destitute and homeless…

Or that there was a period of my life when I wandered the streets of East London, penniless, destitute and hungry, intensely grateful for the shelter and occasional food parcels provided by a church in the Quigney that sadly no longer exists…

Or that this was not the first time that I had been homeless. I was homeless on more than one occasion with my parents…

Or that because of that experience, among several others, I have developed a real heart of compassion for the lost and broken people of Port Elizabeth, where I live now….

Or that I know the real value of a good meal and fresh clothing, and how much HOPE a simple gesture can give a person…

But I do.

Proverbs 3:27 tells us “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.”

James 2:14-17 asks us, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

The Vision for the City

As you read through the Paul Project document downloadable here, you’ll very soon become aware of my vision for the city of Port Elizabeth.

Can YOU imagine a city where domestic abuse, sexual abuse and rape are all things of the past?

A city where crime & unemployment figures are down…and employment figures are up? Where alcohol & substance abuse figures are down. Where there are very few street children…

A city where you know who your neighbours are…and they know who you are….where you often go to church together…

…where people have hope for a brighter future…

…completely at peace with itself…
